HIS FAVOURITE GOALS
Have you ever wondered which goals are David's favourite ? Here you go the list of them with his personal comments.
1. Man Utd v Wimbledon, Selhurst Park - August 1996
”I've scored a few goals, so it is difficult to choose one, but I think the goal that sticks out for me was the goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon. It was a special goal for me and a special time because I was just starting my first-team career. I remember Brian McClair just rolling me the ball and I just though 'why not, I'll give it a go!'. I've been given a picture recently where the ball is about to hit the back of the net and just behind the go
al you can see my mum, dad and sister, so that has pride of place in my house.”
2. England 1-1 Greece, Old Trafford - October 2001
”Another one of my favourites would be the Greece goal and the emotion surrounding that goal, the importance of it and the whole game. It was difficult for us because we didn't play that well. Personally to score the goal that takes your country to the World Cup finals will always be something special to me.”
3. England 1-0 Argentina, Sapporo. July 2002
”My third favourite goal was the penalty against Argentina in the World Cup, because of all the emotion surrounding it. Four years ago we had played the same team in the 1998 World Cup, and four years later we came up against the same team. We were awarded a penalty, I stepped up, scored it and it won the game. The emotion around it was incredible.”
4. Preston 3-2 Fulham, Deepdale - February 1995
”Another one of my favourites - and I am sure people will be surprised - was a free-kick I scored for Preston. I can't remember who it was against, but I know Terry Hurlock was playing, so I stayed away from him during the game for obvious reasons! That was a different time in my career, a special time when I look back at it, I'd gone on loan to Preston, I was worried about my career at Manchester United, so it was nice to score a free-kick.”
5. Manchester United 4-3 Real Madrid, Old Trafford - April 2003
”One of my favourite goals was the free-kick I scored against Real Madrid for Manchester United in one of the last Champions League games I played for them. I had been sub, but I came on, we were losing 3-2 and I think Ronaldo had just gone off after scoring his hat-trick. We had a free-kick on the edge of the area and I scored from it, so it's always a really fond memory of mine.”
